Against the backdrop of a two year struggle to end the covid-19 pandemic, Russia’s war against Ukraine is creating a new division of Europe that will change global power politics irrevocably and usher in a much more unstable world order. The threats for global peace and stability as well as the consequences to the global economy are at the forefront of current developments. Hopes for sustainable recovery co-exist with disorders in supply chains and the energy markets in the midst of concern on public debt and rising inflation. In these turbulent times, solidarity, cohesion and multi-lateral co-operation are the priorities to tackle the challenges while the need for a more resilient growth model and the green and digital transitions still remain crucial.
Recent developments in the Western Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean become increasingly significant, affecting the policy and strategy of the governments in the region – and beyond. New and old threats and risks are looming, while opportunities for trans-border co-operation and business partnerships in the region keep emerging. A new momentum for peace, stability and prosperity could be achieved by upgrading the dialogue between the region’s governments, institutions and stakeholders.
